Visiting Peekaboo Slot Canyon in Kanab Utah

Peekaboo slot canyon is a fairly short and easy half mile hike that is accessible to everyone.

Peekaboo Slot Canyon in Kanab Utah is a true gem.

Peekaboo slot canyon (also known as Red Canyon) is a fairly easy hike that is accessible to travelers of all backgrounds. It’s a short hike of approximately 0.7 miles round trip. The canyon is dry and the floor is flat, making it a trail that almost everyone can navigate. It’s also one of the hikes in the area that does not require a special permit or hiking gear to visit.

Location

Near Kanab Utah, Peekaboo truly is one of the best and easiest hikes for families including those with smaller children. This canyon located about 10 minutes north of Kanab right off Hwy 89 should not be confused with another Peekaboo canyon located farther north by Spooky Gulch near the Grand Staircase Escalante area

Guided Tour [Recommended]

The Canyon can be visited with a guided tour or for free with a bit of extra planning. When we visited in October we joined a very small group tour with Dreamland Safari. We had a great time from start to finish. The entire process was simple and our guide was both friendly and knowledgeable.

The tour lasted roughly 3 hours and was priced at $99/person. Joining a tour is our recommended way to visit Peekaboo because access to the canyon requires a 4WD high clearance vehicle.

To visit the canyon by yourself, be sure to do your research and travel with the appropriate vehicle. If you already drive a 4WD, high clearance vehicle then you’re good to go. Alternatively, you can hike to the canyon from the parking lot but that is not recommended since  it would be a nearly 9 mile hike on an extremely sandy path.

Drive Your Vehicle

If you have an existing 4WD, high clearance vehicle then you can download the free Kanab Trails App and embark on a self-guided tour.

Rent A Jeep

There is a local car company that rents jeeps for the day. Note: it’s recommended to have the tires deflated to 25 PSI.

An Alternative To Arizona’s Antelope Canyon

Peekaboo slot canyon has a slightly longer trail than Lower Antelope Canyon but both Peekaboo and Antelope Canyon are carved from the same Navajo Sand formation.

What’s great about Peekaboo is that it is a LOT less crowded and provides tranquility and an opportunity to explore the canyon at your own pace. It’s a quiet and peaceful experience.

Photography

For photographers the ease and calm of navigating Peekaboo slot canyon is absolutely fantastic. Drones are allowed on the tour but the canyon is not an ideal place for them given how narrow the canyons are. Lighting varies depending on the season but early mornings provide great light in the summer while mid-day is good in the winter.
