Getting There

If you have a vehicle, drive east on Route 9 to go through the famous Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel. The trail is in the Upper East Canyon and starts just east of the tunnel.

Detailed Guide: Canyon Overlook in Zion National Park

While in the park you can use Google Maps to navigate to the trail. National Parks don’t always have great internet service so it’s recommended to download offline maps when possible.

A vehicle is needed to reach the Canyon Overlook Trailhead. Follow highway 9  to the east entrance of the Mount Carmel Tunnel that’s directly below the East Temple Saddle. You’ll arrive at the parking area on the south side of the road and you’ll see the start of the trailhead across the street on the north side of the road.

In addition to the small parking lot, there are small overflow parking areas further east if you are okay with walking a few minutes up the road back to the trailhead. Zion continues to grow in popularity and parking can get full quickly, particularly in the summer months. We recommend visiting the trail very early in the morning or later in the day before sunset in order to avoid crowds.

After walking a few steps to get to the slick rock above the road the trail is level for the most part and even children would not find the hike overly strenuous. There are railings in many parts of the trail but you still have to be very cautious because there are a few parts of the trail that are exposed and a fall in these areas could be dangerous. So for those with children, or who have trouble balancing do approach the hike slowly.

The viewpoint is absolutely incredible so be sure to relax and enjoy the views for as long as you’d like. This view has produced some of the most spectacular and breathtaking photos of Zion canyon. Note: there are cliff edges everywhere when you arrive at the viewpoint so exercise extreme caution. No view or photo is ever worth a fatal thousand-foot fall.
