How to Get There:

The Benagil Cave is situated near the small fishing village of Benagil, approximately 50 kilometers from Faro Airport. Here are the recommended ways to reach this captivating location:

  • Car: Renting a car is the most convenient option, allowing you to explore the Algarve Coast at your own pace. From Benagil, it’s a short drive to the cave. Be sure to check parking availability and fees in the area.
  • Guided Tours: Joining a guided boat tour is a popular and hassle-free way to reach the Benagil Cave. Several local operators offer excursions from nearby coastal towns such as Portimão, Lagos, or Albufeira. These tours often include additional stops at scenic spots along the coast. You can join a boat, kayak, or SUP board tour
  • Self-Guided Tour: If you’re confident in your ability to navigate to the cave on your own, you can rent a kayak or SUP board and visit on your own. This will allow you the opportunity to visit the cave early morning and have the attraction all to yourself.

PROTIP: Boats can enter Benagil cave but you CANNOT step out of the boat for safety reasons. If you join a boat tour, you’ll be taking pictures from a distance. By Kayak/SUP board you can go all the way inside the cave.

    Safety Tips:

While visiting the Benagil Cave, it’s important to prioritize safety. Keep the following tips in mind for a secure and enjoyable experience:

    • Tides and Swells: Check the weather forecast and sea conditions before your visit. High tides and rough swells can make entering the cave dangerous. Avoid entering the cave during adverse weather conditions or when sea conditions are not favorable.
    • Experienced Guides: If opting for a boat or kayak tour, choose reputable and experienced guides who are familiar with the cave’s conditions and can navigate safely.
    • Swim with Caution: If you decide to swim or snorkel within the cave, be mindful of your surroundings and be aware of currents. Keep a safe distance from the cave walls and avoid swimming near the entrance when boats are present.

PROTIP: While you can technically swim to the cave it is NOT RECOMMENDED. The tides can be very challenging to navigate through.
