Getting To Cappadocia

A how-to guide for getting to Cappadocia by flight, bus or train.

Getting to Cappadocia

When most people research Turkey, one of the images that come up is the iconic hot air balloons that fill up the sky in Cappadocia. Luckily, this area of Turkey is very well connected, and getting to Cappadocia is fairly easy. Your choices include short flights, long-distance buses, and trains.

Arriving By Plane

  • This is the easiest route for most travelers to arrive in Cappadocia
  • There are two airports in Cappadocia:
    • Nevsehir Kapadokya Airport (NAV)
    • Kayseri Erkilet Airport (ASR)
  • Nevsehir Kapadokya Airport (NAV), it’s 37.6 km (23.4 mi) away from Goreme and takes about 37 minutes to drive. It has the shortest distance between the two airports but it has incoming flights from Istanbul only. So no matter where you are coming from in the country you will have to route through Istanbul.
  • Kayseri Ekilet Airport (ASR), it’s 74 km (46 mi) from Goreme and takes about an hour to drive.
  • Be sure to schedule an airport shuttle from Nevsehir or Kayseri ahead of time. You can also work with your hotel to arrange an airport shuttle pick-up.
  • PRO TIP: taxis from the airport are not recommended as you will surely be scammed.

Arriving By Bus

  • This is an option for budget travelers looking to visit Cappadocia
  • Arriving by bus requires a much longer travel time but works out to be more affordable with bus tickets being a fraction of a flight price
  • Turkey has a lot of bus companies that offer comfortable long-distance buses. The buses will drop you right off in Goreme and from there you can walk to your hotel or hostel. There are no additional transfers required like when you take a flight.
  • The official Turkey site does not allow for purchases with a foreign credit card so check out busbud.com for flight routes
    • Ensure that you are checking bus routes to Goreme (unless you’ve decided not to stay in this popular area)
    • Common bus routes depart from Istanbul or Antalya [~10-hr travel times for both routes]
  • PRO TIP: Recommended bus companies include Metro Turizm, Kamil Koc, and Nevsehir Sayahat

Arriving By Train

  • Trains are a possible choice depending on where you are coming from but because railways in Turkey are not as seamless as in other parts of Europe this is not the most straight-forward option
  • The closest railway to Goreme is the Kayseri Railway Station
  • Train routes to Cappadocia are possible from Ankara to Kayseri and also technically from Istanbul (though you need to take the train from Istanbul to Ankara and then from Ankara to Kayseri)
  • Like those arriving by plane, you will need to take a shuttle from Kayseri to Goreme when you arrive
  • PRO TIP: Given the inconveniences of this method of traveling, arriving by plane is not generally recommended
